Monthly Archive for July, 2008

18 days left…

We are all very aware of the remaining time we have here in the US… and how fast it is flying by.  The kids have been enjoying their days here very much, reconnecting with old friends.  Every evening at dinner we have a different “set” of children, since virtually every day one or more of them is off with a friend or two.  Bill and I have continued to be busy with paperwork, purchasing, and packing.  The shipping container was successfully loaded last Saturday, July 12, thanks to the help of about 15 dear brothers and sisters in Christ who worked along with us for 6 hours.  The container is due in Dakar on August 11, just a week or so after we arrive.  It will be interesting to see how all our belongings survive the trip!  The gentleman who was driving the truck which carried the container said he had never before seen “ordinary people” load a container – usually it is a crew of professional movers.  I kept busy at the computer the whole time, creating the manifest as the boxes and furniture was loaded on the truck, but I know that many, many bungie cords and ropes were used in the attempt to tie everything down for the sea voyage.  We’ll let you know how it works out!

We leave for Maine in just 7 days, and are looking forward to that time with family at the lake.  At the same time, we know that our flight to Africa is just a few days after we get back from Maine, so we are trying to enjoy each day to the fullest!

We’re back in Franklin!

Bill got the computer all set up here in our “home away from home,” so we’re connected again.  We’re grateful to have arrived back at the Clement’s house in Franklin, MA for the month of July.  Bryan and Lori and their son Bradley always make us feel so welcome and comfortable in their lovely home!

Our move from Québec went smoothly.  Two men from the church, Réjean Simoneau and Richard Demers, helped Bill and Will load the truck this past Saturday in record time.  Our friends from language school, Ken and Ellen Fuss, brought donuts and took the boys to their pool to swim so that Bill and I could get some of the last odds and ends packed.  And our friends Alain and Diane Simoneau, who had hosted Anna for an overnight the night prior to our move, invited us over for a delicious dinner to celebrate our last night in Québec.  We were in bed by 11:00 – unheard of for us, the night before a move!

We slept on air mattresses, so after deflating them, rolling up our sleeping bags, taking showers, and getting the last few boxes on the truck, we were off.  It was about 9 in the morning, and it was pouring!  It rained off and on the whole way home, but it didn’t cause any problems on the trip.  The border crossing was very easy – they didn’t even have Bill open the moving van.  There was a lot of traffic in New Hampshire, so we didn’t arrive back in Franklin until around 8.  We were all very excited to see the familiar buildings and streets!

Since we’ve been back, we’ve spent many hours unloading the 2 vans and the moving truck into the storage facility.  It’s been difficult to organize things – there are large items (like motorcycles and appliances) and small boxes, things that are staying and things that are going,  things that we need in the month of July, things we want to take on the plane.  It’s hard to keep it all straight!

But, we press on.  We have lots of things to look forward to in the month of July.  Visits to churches, visits with friends, and family times.  We’re happy to be back!
